Accountants for Mechanics

Parts inventory, jobs in progress, hoists on finance and apprentices on payroll — a workshop's numbers only make sense when stock and labour are tracked properly.

What do mechanics need from an accountant?

Three things beyond the return: inventory and job costing so parts and labour margins are visible separately, equipment finance structured correctly (chattel mortgage versus lease changes your GST and deduction timing), and payroll compliance for apprentices and trainees under the correct award classifications with super at 12%. Workshops also commonly miss fuel tax credits and tooling write-offs.

What we watch

What matters most for mechanical workshops.

Parts margin versus labour margin

Reported separately, or you can't tell whether the problem is pricing, buying or productivity.

Equipment finance treatment

Chattel mortgage, hire purchase or lease — each with different GST timing and deduction profiles. Choose before signing.

Apprentice payroll and super

Award classifications, tool allowances, training time and super guarantee — including apprentices where wage subsidies may apply.

Stock on hand at year end

A real stocktake changes taxable income. Obsolete stock written off before 30 June is a legitimate deduction.

Deductions

  • Apprentice wages, super and training costs

  • Loan interest and finance costs on equipment

FAQ

Mechanics — questions we're asked most.

How should I finance a hoist or diagnostic machine?

A chattel mortgage generally lets you claim the GST upfront and depreciate the asset while deducting interest; a lease spreads deductions across rental payments. The better option depends on your GST position, cash flow and whether write-off provisions apply for the year. Get the numbers modelled before signing the finance contract.

Do I need to do a stocktake?

If you carry parts, yes — closing stock directly affects taxable income. A proper count at 30 June also lets you write off genuinely obsolete stock, which is deductible. Estimating stock is one of the most common causes of a tax bill that doesn't match the year you had.

Can I claim fuel tax credits?

Possibly, for fuel used in eligible business activities and equipment. Eligibility and rates vary and require records of use. We check whether the claim is worth the substantiation effort for your workshop.

What payroll traps hit workshops?

Apprentice classifications and progression, tool and travel allowances, paid training time, and treating casuals as if loading covers everything. Super at 12% on ordinary time earnings — including many allowances — is the item most often underpaid.
